This assignment was a more interesting
one for me as I tried to impose more of a challenge on myself for the topic. Most
of my classmates went with reimagining's
of literary classics, while I went for a recent gothic-horror graphic novel. I re-imagined the major themes of the story and typical graphic-novel cover layouts into a design
that could easily be adapted for a traditional book layout.
Descriptive words highlighting the series' genre, story, and characters mold into a somewhat distorted shape resembling a traditional portrait of the protagonist. The back cover layout is similar in structure to the original publisher's format, although more subtle in terms of the
imagery to reflect the story's tone
To build more on the assignment, rather than just having a book cover, I decided to create an ad layout, testing what kind of atmosphere and wording would work best to generate interest in the book in the way a professional seller would.
Mock ads are presented in Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter formats respectively.
This project was created as part of an assignment to demonstrate skills in image and
typography layout in book format, not for profit as an official commission. Black Butler
was created by author and artist Yana Toboso, licenced by Yen Press for the U.S. release.
